General Description of Test:The BAS II is a test battery intended for use with children and adolescents to assess cognitive abilities and educational achievement. It comprises an Early Years battery and a School Age battery, available separately or as a Full Age Range set. The version reviewed and described here is the School Age battery, for children and adolescents between the ages of 6:0 to 17:11 years. The battery comprises six Core scales which yield Ability scores and are converted to T-scores with associated centiles. These can also be converted to age equivalent scores. The Core scale scores combine in pairs to produce three cluster scores expressed as normalised standard scores with associated centiles: · Word Definitions and Verbal Similarities combine to give a Verbal Ability score · Matrices and Quantitative Reasoning combine to give a Non-verbal Reasoning Ability score · Recall of Designs and Pattern Construction combine to give a Spatial Ability score The combination of all six Core scales produces a measure of General Conceptual Ability (GCA) expressed as a normalised standard score. Where it is judged that verbal tasks will not provide a fair measure of ability (for example, in the case of hearing impairment or speech and language difficulties) a Special Non-verbal Composite (SNC) score may be obtained using the four Non-verbal Core scales. An additional five Diagnostic scales enable the assessor to explore hypotheses generated as a result of performance on the Core scales through further assessment of underlying cognitive processes. Three Achievement scales assess Reading, Spelling and Number Skills and enable comparisons to be made between observed scores and scores predicted on the basis of the GCA or SNC score. The comprehensive Technical Manual covers the rationale, theoretical underpinnings and development of the BAS II, systematic interpretation of test scores with illustrations, standardisation and statistical properties and an overview of Item Response Theory and the Rasch model. The similarly thorough Administration and Scoring Manual provides detailed information regarding test and scoring procedures. It warns that users must be fully familiar with these procedures before using the BAS II. Scoring and Reporting software is available at additional cost.
