General Description of Test:Intrinsic is a two part, self-report questionnaire comprising 105 items designed to assess motivational tendencies of relevance to work. It was originally called the Motivational Styles Questionnaire and was re-named Intrinsic in February 2007. The first part - Work Style Preferences, or Preferred Role - reflects what is most important to respondents in the work situation and hence where effort is likely to be exerted. It has seven scales which are grouped into the three dimensions of Achievement, Structure and Power as follows: Achievement and Independence – seeking fulfillment through becoming specialists in their field; Structure and Affiliation – seeking support from working within systems and with people; Systems, People and Personal Power – making use of other people and systems. The second part of the instrument – Work and Life Attitudes, or Way of Working – has three scales. The first, Short-Term Striving, is concerned with belief in self as seen by the rate of getting started on new tasks; the second, Medium-Term Striving, is concerned with belief in control over situations as reflected by driving projects through to completion versus proceeding with caution and considering alternatives and thirdly General Orientation is described as having an operational rather than a personal focus. The design of the instrument draws upon the research carried out by numerous personality and motivations theorists including Adler (1907), Maslow (1943), McClelland and Atkinson (1953), Weiner (1965), Rosenburg (1965) and Rotter (1966). The content of the Short-Term Striving Scale is a measure of ‘global confidence’ based on Rosenburg’s (1965) Self Esteem Scale and the Medium-Term Striving Scale is based on Rotter’s (1966) Internal-External Control Scale. The instrument is mainly used online with the option of one of two computer generated reports, one for a selection context and the other for development purposes. A paper and pencil version is also available from the publisher.
